A Macintosh is a personal computer based on Motorola’s 68000 series of central processing units (CPUs) and designed by Apple Computer, Inc. The Macintosh was released in January 1984, and is currently Apple’s bestselling personal computer. The Macintosh went on to establish Apple as a major force in computer hardware and software.
A crossover product, Adobe PageMaker 6.5 (released by Adobe Systems, Inc.) replaced the previous PageMaker 4.x version, which was available for a large number of Macintosh computers, while the former MacintoshDesigner 1.0 was available for Windows. PageMaker 6.5 also included Mac compatibility including the ability to edit Mac images or make Macintosh documents.
It later added the ability to draw directly on the screen using the Pen tools. The Macintosh version was ported to the IBM PC (which at the time, roughly accounted for 85% of the desktop publishing market) and then run on Windows. The Windows version was ported to the Mac in 1987.
Adobe PageMaker 6.5 for Windows 3.1, which was released in May 1987, gave users access to 8.5”[6] floppy disks instead of 10” floppy disks, introduced 16-bit color mapping for text and graphics (or “Enhanced Color mode”), and gave users the ability to save multiple file formats.
Adobe PageMaker 6.5 for Windows 3.11, released in March 1988, had a menu bar at the top of the screen for commonly used tools. The Macintosh version had a general tab menu on the bottom of the screen.
